Reliance plans to deploy a Connected Car device in partnership with AirWire

Reliance Jio Infocomm recently landed a contract to US-based AirWire Technologies in its drive to commercialize a Connected Car device to customers in India. Jio plans to enter the automobile telematics with the launch of this connected car device, having successfully garnered over 100 million 4G mobile users in India through free data and voice services. This partnership will provide Jio with connected car device platform in the vehicle for their connected car initiative, Jio Car Connect. AirWire is currently manufacturing the Connected Car device in alliance Reliance Jio in India.

Reliance Jio is currently in talks with automobile companies, convincing them to launch the device soon in India. The price of the device has been estimated to stand at par or cost less than its Mifi device, which stood at price of Rs 2,000. Jio has been working closely on this device with AirWire to ensure a unique driving experience for the customers, by enabling an innovative set of services and apps. The device has been made to operate in the telco’s pan-India advanced 4G/LTE Network. Furthermore, the device will enable connected car apps and services, such as WiFi hotspot features, location based apps, automobile telematics, security and safety.

The device shall provide uninterrupted connectivity through Jio’s 4G LTE network, and seamlessly upload important vehicle data to the cloud for analysis. The device also enables convenient and useful apps and services on the consumer’s smartphones. The device essentially attaches to the vehicle’s OBD-II port over a cable in the vehicle to enable WiFi and Bluetooth, utilizing which smartphone apps provide communication, cinema, TV, music, games, location data, and vehicle telematics.

The AirWire Connected Car uses a smartphone app to deliver vehicle information to the user. For instances of theft, the device immobilizes the vehicle, alerts owner, and locates the vehicle. Oil stats, tire pressure, water levels, fuel info, and battery change alerts are some of the other vital stats furnished by the IoT device. Moreover, the device provides data necessary for the app to display information on driving habits such as speed alerts, panic braking details, and speed limits set by choice; besides alerting the user every time the vehicle isn’t locked properly. Debashis Bagchi, President & CEO, AirWire Technologies remarks, “The world will see the first countrywide deployment of Connected Car technology, owing to Jio’s commitment and focus on this market.”
