Tesla’s New ‘Dog Mode’ Update Has The Potential To Be A Game Changer In The Automobile Industry

Isn’t it bad when you are faced with the situation of leaving your beloved pets in the car in the scorching heat? Now automobile giant Tesla has come up with a new feature in their cars for the exact same situation, called the Dog Mode.

Dogs And Cars: Not A Good Combination

There have been many incidences of dogs suffering due to them being locked inside a car. Hundreds of dogs die in hot cars every year, veterinarians say, when their owners leave them and dash into a store “for just a couple minutes.” Dogs can suffer brain damage and die when their core body temperature reaches 107 degrees F. Unlike us humans, they cannot sweat to lower their body temperature. There’s a really short window, he says, between a dog seeming OK and becoming dangerously overheated.

How It All Started

Tesla has been working on this new feature since quite some time now. Its original motivation of Tesla behind this mode came from one of the Tesla Model 3 owners. The owner had tweeted saying “Can you put a dog mode on the Tesla Model 3. Where the music plays and the ac is on, with a display on the screen saying “I’m fine my owner will be right back” to which, Tesla CEO Elon Musk agreed that the automaker should release a ‘dog mode’ to keep puppies safe and cool inside Tesla vehicles.

The same person also suggested adding a message on the centre screen to let people passing by know that the dog in the car is doing okay and Tesla incorporated that as well. Another tweet suggested making the inside temperature visible to reassure passerby about the dog safe, again incorporated by Tesla.

All About The Dog Mode

Just as the name suggests, the Dog Mode is made for your dog to be comfortable inside your Tesla car at a scorching heat. Following is the tweet from Tesla:

The mode is enabled when the user sets Keep Climate On to DOG, make adjustments within temperature limits, then leave knowing your pet will stay comfortable. Dog Mode will stay on after the owner leaves the car and if the car battery reaches less than 20% of the total charge, the owner will be notified on the phone via an app.

The best thing about this feature is that it doesn’t require to buy the newest model Tesla in order to access it. It only needs the software to be upgraded to your software, which is done wirelessly.

Other Updates

Tesla introduced two more software updates along with the Dog Mode.

1.Sentry mode: This mode has been introduced to help protect against break-ins and theft. This mode uses sensors to detect potential threats and alert you while your car is parked. The system uses the Autopilot cameras to detect potential threats and it goes through different levels of alarms based on those detected threats.

The image appears to be inspired by HAL 9000, a fictional AI character in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

2.Dashcam: With this latest update, Tesla cars can now record videos from its side cameras. This is a notable upgrade over the feature’s initial iterations, which relied on the video feed from the Tesla Model S, X, and Model 3’s narrow forward-facing camera. With recordings from the side cameras, Tesla owners would be able to get recordings of incidents that happen in their vehicles’ blind spots.

Connected Vehicles In India

In recent years, many Indian organisations have started investing in connected vehicles industry to gain market share by capitalising on the growing Indian consumer automobile market. Connected vehicle technologies have a great deal to offer to Indian consumers. Car owners today are empowered with the ability to connect their cars to different mobile applications that offer features to avoid threat and burglary. Presently, of all automobiles available in India, it is estimated that somewhere between 2 to 3 percent have some primary form of connectivity.

We already have some Indian companies launching connected car technologies. Reliance Jio Infocomm is one of them, where it is intending to launch its first connected car device for Indian users. Recently, Maruti Suzuki had launched  ‘Suzuki Connect’, a new telematics solution system for its Nexa range of premium category cars, designed to provide customers with improved safety, security and a user-friendly connected car experience, including vehicle tracking, emergency assistance, vehicle live location status, service due reminders and driving behaviour analysis. MG Motor India had announced last year that they are looking to make inroads into the Indian market, with their new SUV launch in India, through a collaboration with Cisco and IOT expert UNLIMIT who will develop an India specific technology for connected cars.

When Will It Roll Out

The new feature is going to be rolled out slowly to ensure there are no situations that the carmaker may have overlooked, and then it will be available starting from next week, CEO and founder Musk said. Here’s his reply to a tweet:

Tesla has already made updates to its software to help with child or pet safety with its Cabin Overheat Protection feature released in 2016. Musk has been taking many feature requests from owners. The fade mode, for example, was also a result of one of its users, and with every update, it never ceases to amaze the techies.
